Environmental Impact
Our paper mill has systems in place that meet or exceed governmental mandates and regulations for air and water quality. Unlike many paper mills, we do not use coal or oil as fuel for our boiler. Instead, we burn area wood shavings which might otherwise be land filled, resulting in a much cleaner operation. And, because we purchase OCC from area cardboard recycling centers, we are helping to prevent over one hundred thousand tons of cardboard from reaching the landfill yearly.
Papermaking uses large quantities of water. Jackson Paper has an unique closed loop system that eliminates the need to discharge into the nearby creek or to a municipal treatment plant. Only a handful of paper mills use this state-of-art system.
A pollution control scrubber system prevents the majority of wood ash from leaving the stack. Jackson Paper’s environmental efforts have resulted in a NC Governor's Award in the past.
Community Impact
Jackson Paper employs 116 full time employees with an annual payroll of about $6 million. It is one of Jackson County’s largest private employers. In addition, over $2 million is spent on purchasing contracts with area suppliers. Many local groups benefit from Jackson Paper’s financial support and employee volunteerism. The most prominent organization is the American Cancer Society’s Jackson County Relay for Life, where Jackson Paper has been the top fundraising company for several years.
Jackson Paper funds two $1,000 scholarships to Western Carolina University students studying in the Environmental Engineering and Industrial Engineering programs.
In addition, Catamount Sports receive support through company contributions. Sustaining community and environmental needs while maintaining a corporate balance will continue to be an objective of Jackson Paper.
