March 26, 2009 -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SYLVA, N.C. – Jackson Paper Manufacturing Co. recently invested $1.85 million to upgrade its recycled paper manufacturing facility in Sylva.

Crews spent four days installing a custom-built headbox, which performs the most important steps in the papermaking process. The headbox delivers the pulp-water solution slurry onto a wide moving wire mesh, where the water pulls away and leaves only the fiber that eventually becomes the paper sheet. The process influences the quality and strength of the paper.

Jackson Paper’s new headbox allows employees to better regulate and more precisely control the amount and concentration of the solution feeding onto the wire, ultimately resulting in a higher quality sheet of paper.

“Not only is this an investment in Jackson Paper, but it’s also an investment in our customers. With the new headbox, we are able to provide them an even better product,” said Timothy L. Campbell, President and CEO of Jackson Paper. The company produces 100-percent recycled paper used by independent box manufacturers to make the fluted layer of corrugated boxes.

The new headbox was custom built over a nine-month period at a factory in Quebec, Canada, and delivered to Sylva by tractor trailer in early March. An in-house crew of 36 worked with contractors from 14 different firms to remove the old headbox and install the new. The paper machine was offline 96 hours for the upgrade.

Jackson Paper Manufacturing Co. is an independently-owned paper mill in Sylva, N.C., and the largest producer of 100-percent recycled paper in the state of North Carolina. Mill owners have invested $16 million in machine and facility upgrades since purchasing the facility in 1995. With 119 workers, Jackson Paper is the third largest employer in Jackson County.
